RusHydros Almanac: New Power for the Far East

11 March 2015 year

Thirty-six per cent of Russia’s total territory — this area could fit 11 Frances! However, this piece of land does not look like Europe from space — on a satellite map of the planet with dots and clusters of shining lights the Far East looks like a black patch… We had to calculate the total area of the Far East in Frances, figure out its challenges, and analyze long-range development plans for that potentially richest region of the country in order to make a cycle of videos about RusHydro’s Far East program.

Apartment houses, schools, and hospitals consume seven out of ten kilowatt-hours of electricity generated in the Far East. Most of the local generating facilities are worn down. Power engineers will need to decommission old power plants with a total capacity of 3 gigawatts by 2025. The government vested an important mission in RusHydro: to launch four new heating stations to provide the region with not only electricity, but also, most importantly, heat. The plants are located in Blagoveshchensk, Yakutsk, Sovetskaya Gavan, and in Sakhalin, and we help RusHydro tell their stories using the language of infographics. We have developed detailed 3D models of the facilities and maps of the regions specially for this project. Our film crew went to construction sites to see with their own eyes (and shoot) the construction process.

Work is currently underway at water power plants as well, including the Nizhne-Bureiskaya Hydroelectric Power Station — the counter-regulator of the Bureiskaya station — that is under construction, which never stops, even in severe frosts (our crew had to endure them as well). One of our Far East cycle videos was dedicated to that station.
